There are several ways in which you can enhance the look of your gardens and backyards and add an interesting element to them. Arbors and pergolas have been gaining more popularity over the years. If you want to enjoy your outdoor landscape while being protected from the sun, a pergola is an ideal option. A garden arbor, on the other hand, creates a sense of whimsy and romance in your landscape. Most people allow vines and creepers to grow on their arbors to add a rustic charm.

ARBORS

While originally intended to be structures that would provide shade in gardens, arbors serve other purposes as well. Some people use them to divide their landscape while others use them as entryways or archways to add interest to their outdoor spaces.


Arbors are generally ideal for small gardens and backyards. They add structure to the space and can also be used to act as vertical support for plants and vines. Keep in mind that if you intend to use your arbor for growing plants, you'll need to place it in an area that receives sunlight and proper nutrition.


If your arbor is for decoration only, you might choose from redwood, cedar, or other similar materials. If you plan to use your arbor for growing plants, you should use vinyl material, as wood can become damaged.

PERGOLAS

Pergolas offer more functionality than arbors. The biggest perk is that they offer a great deal of shading from the sun. Pergolas are perfect for people who love spending time outdoors.


A covered pergola can be a great addition to your backyard or garden. Compared to arbors, they are better suited for larger landscapes. You can build a pergola as an attachment to your home or as a separate structure. Having a pergola attached to your home is more economical, however it can cause damage to the structure if not built carefully. You have the option of selecting an open roof or a solid roof when designing your pergola. While some people prefer an open roof to allow sunlight in, most of our clients want pergolas with a solid roof.
