Steps & Walkways

steps & walkways

Walkways are vital as they connect your home to various areas of your landscape and offer protection for your grass by limiting traffic on the lawn. Creating pathways to your pool or garden will increase the functionality of your yard and improve its aesthetics. Walkways can be beautifully designed with a multitude of pavers available and are one of the most important aspects of your landscape planning.

At Setting Sun Patios & Decks, we often advise our clients to plan their pavement and hardscaping before planning the rest of their landscape. Our many projects around Raleigh, Cary, Wake Forest, Garner and Apex have involved paying special attention to how we incorporate walkways and steps into an overall design. Additionally, our projects in Chapel Hill, Durham, Morrisville, Knightdale and Clayton have given us experience building walkways with many different materials in a variety of designs.

MATERIAL MATTERS

The type of material you select for your walkway or steps will play a large role in its overall look and design as well as the maintenance required for the area. Paver walkway designs are greatly influenced by the materials used in their construction.

Flagstone: Flagstone is a very popular material for a walkway. It looks natural and attracts attention immediately. The color and texture are a great addition to the overall design. Along with its attractive appearance, flagstone has practical advantages too. It has a textured surface that is non-slippery, the material is durable, and it absorbs water naturally. Additionally, grass and vegetation can grow through the gaps in the stones and add charm to the entire setting.

Brick: Like flagstone, brick is also extremely popular and fits in well with old, colonial or craftsman-style homes. Brick walkways have a timeless charm to them, and they fit in naturally with any lawn or garden. The material is permeable to an extent and very durable. The biggest advantage of brick is that repairs and maintenance are simple. If bricks on your walkway become damaged, you can simply remove and replace them. It is easy to keep them clean by washing with soap and water occasionally.

Concrete: Concrete is extremely versatile and can be used in a variety of different ways. Some designs use pavers while others involve adding color to a poured concrete installation. You can add decorative borders to any path or use stamped concrete to create a unique look. The options provided with concrete are limitless and it is why an increasing number of people are choosing it.
